The below chart / list is no longer accurate and is provided as historical reference information from circa 1980-90's.
Australia's analogue television standard format is PAL(B) & Digital is DVB-T. Other countries use one of three analog standards NTSC, PAL or SECAM. These standards are not compatible with each other and there are variations "( )" within each standard.
The basic difference between all three standards is picture colour information and lines per frame. SECAM standard countries have migrated to PAL and most will migrate to digital DVB-T, while a few have selected the NTSC digital standard ATSC or ISDB-T/b.NTSC 525 Lines
National Television Standards Committee, U.S.A circa 1953.
PAL 625 Lines
Phase Alternate Line, European defined standard.
SECAM 625 Lines
Sequential Couleur a Memoire, French defined standard.
All three systems transmit different "colour and line standards". All can be received in monochrome on old Black & White receivers and on most analog colour TV receivers made after 1999. As the world converts to DiGiTaL TV these analogue standards will become obsolete.
You may notice the standards to each country reflect 20th century's super-power alliances or "spheres of influence", DiGiTaL will mask this out to some degree, players are now NTSC (ATSC) and PAL (DVB-T).
